HSC keywords explained

Understand the verb before writing the answer. This page turns HSC command words into practical writing moves.

Command verbs are instructions, not decorations

Many students lose marks because they answer the topic but ignore the command. The verb tells you the thinking shape required.

Choose a verb and press explain.

Fast answer planning

Before writing, complete this sentence: “This question wants me to show…” For analyse, show relationships. For evaluate, show a judgement. For explain, show how or why. For assess, show degree or value. That single pause can save marks.

Common trap

Students often treat “explain” and “describe” the same way. Description says what something is. Explanation shows how or why it matters. In most subjects, the linking sentence is where the mark is won.
